Today we approximated the value of Pi by measuring the Diameter and Circumference of a Circle. We found that if we divide the Circumference by the Diameter we get a number near 3.1 this is Pi.

We then looked at some questions relating to Section 3.6 Circumference and Area of Circles.

Today we discussed bias in sampling. This might be caused by:
  • The sample being non-random
  • A small sample
  • Leading questions
  • Dishonesty
  • Perhaps not using a 'Blind Test'

HW: Explain 5 reasons why a survey might be biased.
A Small Sample Size Lacks Representation:
A small sample size may result in the lack of statistical representation of a phenomenon. For example, a researcher performs a study of transportation behaviors to find out what percentage of college students in a particular city take the bus to school. If her study includes a small sample size of 10 people and those 10 people all walk, bicycle or drive to school, then her sample size has failed to represent those who take the bus. Lack of representation as a result of small sample size becomes particularly evident when attempting to study phenomena that occur infrequently.

Today we discussed random sampling and bias looking at questions from 5.3 Sampling.
We also used the calculator and the computer to generate random numbers and random names from a list..

HW: None
Random sampling

It is easy to misuse the word 'random'. You might say that you carried out your survey by questioning people 'at random', but what does it really mean to choose someone at random?

Random sampling means that members of a 'population' have equal chances of being selected.

Today we completed our mid-term test with a question on sets. The question and solution is uploaded below.

In Section 5.1 Types of data we distinguished between the two types of Categorical data - Nominal and Ordinal. We also discussed 'good' questionnaires, 'bias' and the distinction between Primary and Secondary Sources of Data.
