The integration proof that the area of a disc is = pi r squared came up in 2011. It is difficult but since it came up in 2011 I would be surprised to see it come up again so soon. Below is the requested explanation.

Requested solution SEC 2011 Q1 - not sure if Paper 1 or 2 is required so I have linked below.
Paper 2   Question 1 (Probability)

To explain the answer another way:
Once you have worked out that we want the probability between z=-1.2 and 1.2.
We then look up 1.2 in the z-tables and see it is = 0.8849 (or 88.49%).
Now consider the normal curve diagram: z = 0 is a probability of 50%.
Between 0 and 1.2 is 50% to 88.49% which is a difference of 38.49%.
By symmetry there is also the same probability between z = -1.2 and 0.
So the probability between -1.2 and 1.2 is 2(38.49%) = 76.98%.

Requested solution explanation:

Explanation:
If Max then f''(x1) < 0, if Min f''(x1) > 0.
Differentiating -2xe^(-x^2) involves using the Product Rule letting u = -2x and v = e^(-x^2).

Just to remind you that there are a number of proofs on the course that do need to be learned off. These included in Differentiation - the general rule, the product rule and the quotient rule. All required proofs are linked below:

  • Overview of Proofs (note easier proof by contradiction is triangle one below, pay attention to the construction of root 2 and root 3 also)
  • Proof by Inductinon
  • Geometry Proofs (Theorems 11, 12 & 13 required)
  • Trigonometry Proofs

Hope the study is going well.

A special thank you to the students that participated in the focus group today. And to all this special class I appreciate and complement each of you on your willingness to embrace new ideas, ways of doing things and unfading effort throughout the year.
Today we reviewed some Financial Maths Questions. I have uploaded class notes on 4 key skills in this area:
  • Changing AER to MER
  • Calculating annuities
  • Calculating pensions
  • Calculating mortgage repayments

We also reviewed Area and Volume the revision notes are available opposite. You might add to the notes:
  • Volume of a pyramid; V = Ah/3
  • How to find the area of a polygon? (click here for example)
  • Pythagoras in 3D: a^2 = b^2 + c^2 + d^2

We also looked over Logs and Exponential Functions. The rules of logs are given in the log tables. We graphed Ln x and e^x (see below)
