Solving Linear Equations

Key Words & Ideas

An equation is a maths statement with an equals sign "=" in it. In an equation the left hand side always has the same value as the right hand side.

DEFINITION: What is an Equation?
To solve means: work out the solution (answer) i.e. find the value that you could put in for x that would make the equation true.

When solving an equation we always do the same thing to both sides until we have "x = a number":
  • add or subtract the same thing from both sides
  • multiply or divide both sides by the same thing
  • square or square root both sides
